Going Online
The presenters this week had a difficult task I feel. The topic ‘going on line’ is extremely broad however, the group chose the most beneficial aspect of going online as their focus. In this workshop we looked at using the internet, focusing on creating web pages. I have always questioned how on earth a web page is designed and created and then made to appear to the whole world. Well my questions were answered when we were introduced to a free downloadable website creating
software called ‘NVU’ . The group informed us that NVU is an Open source web authoring system with What You See Is What You Get(WYSIWYG) and HTML modes and site management tool. NVU allows users to create webpages involving text, graphics and colours to complete projects, which can then be uploaded and shared on the Internet.

Our Task- To design a webpage for our school to be uploaded onto the school website, highlighting the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
We were provided with a unit of work based around getting students to create their own website in the classroom. We were guided throughout the whole process which I found extremely helpful and it really pointed out the fact that we need to scaffold our students learning especially in ICT.
Tips:
-
Atomic learninghas free tutorials on how to use NVU, if you need some extra assistance.
-
Alternate text: if your picture doesn’t appear on your web page (rather it displays a red cross in the top left hand corner), alternate text will allow you to display the title of what was supposed to appear e.g ‘Image of Aust gold medal relay’.

Equivalent to NVU- ‘Sea Monkey’ (allows kids to publish), ‘Dream Weaver’
